Each child has a right to a free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment. In every school there are children who are in the best of health and children who are challenged by various health conditions. Fortunately, medical and technological advances now make it possible for many children with chronic health conditions and physical challenges to learn in the same classrooms as other children.
In addition to providing a rigorous academic environment for all students, schools should promote healthy lifestyle choices, help identify and locate services for students with health conditions that may affect learning, and they should meet the health requirements of children with acute and chronic medical needs during the school day. School Nurses help make the provision of health services in a school setting easier and safer for both students and staff.
Back-to-School Season: Immunization Requirements
New State of Missouri requirements are resulting in additional immunizations for current seventh-graders and high-school juniors. The following additional immunizations will be required by the state beginning with the 2023-24 school year:
- All 2023-24 eighth-grade students are required to have one dose of Meningococcal vaccine.
- All high-school seniors are required to have two doses of Meningococcal vaccine, unless the first dose was administered when the student was 16 years of age or older.
The Excelsior Springs School District’s Health Services Department is working with county health officials. It is important to remember that students will not be allowed to enroll for the 2023-24 school year without providing proof of all required immunizations, including the new meningococcal vaccine.
