Northland CAPS

Northland CAPS

Northland CAPS in partnership with seven Northland school districts (Excelsior Springs, Kearney, Liberty, North Kansas City, Park Hill, Platte County and Smithville) and twelve business partners will be conducting Northland SEE (Summer Externship Experience) on July 21, 22 and 23.
Eighty teachers from all seven districts, grades K-12 have applied and been accepted into the first Cohort of this externship experience. Teachers will build an awareness of design thinking through a team-based approach working to design, develop and pitch authentic project ideas to real business partners.
On the first two days teachers will visit businesses to get a better idea of how their company works as well as hear about compelling challenges and problems to solve, so they can formulate a problem statement, which will convert into an authentic project that will challenge our teachers and students.
Twelve companies house in the northland will be working with teacher teams:
Aviation Technical Services
Exhibit Associates Inc.
General Electric
Habitat for Humanity Kansas City
Haldex Brake Products Corporation
Holland 1916
Holland Nameplate
Kansas City Power and Light
Lauren’s Hope Medical ID Jewelry
ProAthlete
Rockwell Labs Ltd
Scarbrough International, Ltd.
On day three teacher teams will work through project ideas developed from their site visits in order to pitch the ideas to business partners at the end of the day.
Teacher teams will take away project ideas that they can implement in their classrooms during the fall. They will showcase their findings at an event in February 2016.
This is an exciting opportunity for education and industry to partner, developing the human capital needed to grow our regional economy.
This training sessions will take place at the Ambassador Building at KCI – 12200 N Ambassador Drive – Kansas City, MO 64154.
